County Employees Lend a Helping Hand
According to Pct. 4 Commissioner Eddie Nelms, "protecting and serving the citizens of Ward County is what we are all about". Over the past few years with a dryer climate Ward County has been victim to several large grass fires. Due to the severity of these fires additional policies and procedures, are now in effect. These new procedures have combined coordinated efforts not only throughout Ward County but surrounding Counties.
In an effort to protect the citizens, Ward County purchased three 6 wheel drive old military transport trucks, and converted them to state of the art Fire Trucks. These vehicles were designed by several experienced individuals in the County with specific fire fighting training. These fire trucks have several unique features one of which is a "sniper hose" that is installed at the front of the truck, this allows fireman to fight fires from all four sides. Another feature is the new grills added to the front of these trucks, this allows them to plow through thick brush as needed. Ward County is known for sandy rough terrain with plenty of mesquite trees to boot!
According to Fire Marshall Billy Riley, in 2007 alone Ward County had 109 fires. Wind is a huge contributing factor in the fires,
Ward County remains under a burn ban, individuals who disobey the burn ban law will receive a ticket.
